Australian Political Rhetoric: Patterns and Practices
Centre for the Study of Australian Politics 2014 Conference
Australian Political Rhetoric: Patterns and Practices
10-11 December 2014
Professor John Uhr (ANU) and Dr Ryan Walter (University of Queensland) have an ARC Discovery Grant on Australian political rhetoric. Last year they held the first of what might emerge as an annual ANU workshop on political rhetoric in Australia. ANU Press has just published their edited book from the 2013 conference: Studies in Australian Political Rhetoric, with chapters by Stephen Mills, Jennifer Rayner, Barry Hindess, Dennis Grube, Mark Rolfe, Mark Hearn and Ian Tregenza, Geoffrey Stokes, Melissa Lovell, as well as separate chapters by Uhr and Walter.
The 2014 conference builds on this experience to promote a research network of scholars interested in the place of rhetoric in Australian politics. Papers from this conference might find a publication outlet in a second edited book or in a special issue of an academic journal. The aim, however, is not new publications but promotion of a cross-disciplinary research network to draw greater public attention to the place of various styles of rhetoric in Australian politics: historically as well as currently.
